First United Methodist Church
Year Listed: 2003
The 1907 Beaux Arts First United Methodist Church is the only historic church left standing in Seattle’s downtown commercial core. While eligible for national, state, and local landmark status, the church has successfully fought such designation at the local level. First United Methodist has plans for a 37-story office tower, which in combination with the adjacent Rainier Club’s plans for a health club and parking spaces to be incorporated in the new building, paves the way for demolition of the historic church building. Discussions between the church, preservation organizations, and the public continue as the church moves closer to a Master Use Permit for the proposed office tower that includes church functions on street and subsurface levels.
